By the time they circled around the house, Betty was there, and looking more like the woman Emmie remembered. She was older and seemed even smaller, and instead of the slacks and cardigans of a librarian she wore a long dress that stretched down to her brown suede boots, and gemstones around her neck. She was also clutching a handful of grass and earth, her eyes closed as if she were drawing strength from nature itself.

They approached her slowly. Betty stretched out her arms as if embracing the sky.

Sarah whispered, “What is she doing?”

As Emmie stepped closer, an odd smell, like spicy incense, hung in the air around her. A familiar scent from long ago. “Excuse me, can we help you?”

Betty turned around. Her face was buried in wrinkles, but she had the same intense look in her eyes that Emmie remembered.

“Betty?” Finn asked. “Do you need something?”

“Not yet.” Betty closed her eyes and turned to the side, as if adjusting herself like a satellite dish to get the best signal. “But something has changed. The energy is dark, and it’s not safe. You’ve seen something strange in there, haven’t you? Something very unusual.”

“Yes. A lot of paranormal activity. The ghosts found me, like you said.”

“That’s not the disturbance I’m referring to. The spirits that have haunted the halls of Caine House have gone silent, and something worse has moved inside. It’s not safe for you to stay here.” She walked closer to the crypt.

“Are you a psychic?” Emmie asked.

Betty ignored the question. “Have you seen any ghosts in this area? Near this crypt?”

“No, I can’t see spirits,” Finn said.

Betty looked directly at Emmie. “What about you, Emmie Fisher? Have you seen or felt anything around this house?”

Emmie stared at her for a moment. “So I do know you. It was you.”

“I supposed you might remember me. I knew your parents. I knew them well.”

“Who are you?” Emmie asked, walking toward her.

“We should have a talk soon. I can explain a few things about your past, but first I need to know why this house has become a beacon of darkness, a heaviness like I haven’t encountered in a long time.”

“Is that why you stopped by?” Finn asked.

“Everything leads back to this house,” Betty said, while stepping over to the crypt. “I need to go in there and see her grave.”

“I went in there,” Finn said.

Betty stopped and stiffened, then turned her head back toward him. “Did you disturb the grave?”

Finn met Emmie’s gaze before answering. “I started unscrewing the cross—”

The old woman fully turned. “After I told you not to mess with anything that was fixed?”

“I had already done it.”

“Ah!” she cried in frustration, clenching her fists. “I knew you were a fool.”

“Whoa, lady!” Finn cried.

Betty’s voice rose above Finn’s. “The grave contained the spirit of a very powerful woman. A spirit I shouldn’t have to deal with at my age. Did you see a spirit?”

Finn hesitated. “No. I mean, I did see a flash of light on the recording.
